Paolo’s Gourmet Italian Market Opens in Westwood

There are days when nothing but Italian food will do. But not just any Italian. When you’re craving it, you want the good stuff. For those days, there is Paolo’s Gourmet, a new Italian experience, located in the former Johnny’s Italian Market location in Westwood and owned by Italian importer, Paolo Salvia.

Similar in concept to the awesome Eataly in Manhattan, Paolo’s offers a terrific selection of olives, marinated artichokes, imported Italian vinegar, oils, pastas and more, but it’s the prepared foods that set this place apart. Since we’re all about carpe diem, we say eat dessert first. Especially when the gelato flavors are as yummy as they are here. Or, if frozen treats aren’t really your jam, pick up some of the other desserts. We’d suggest the cannoli. Or the profiteroles. Or maybe one of each!

But family can not live on sugar alone. So take a stroll along the counter stuffed with prepared pastas, mains and salads and wonder how you are going to decide what to eat first. Some favorites include the aroncini (rice balls stuffed with your choice of meat, 4 cheeses, pistachio or tomato and mozzarella), the beef ragu lasagna, and the anelletti palermitano (baked pasta with beef ragu, peas, mozzarella and pecorino cheese). Prepared foods are heated up for you but some items like the panini and breakfast sandwiches are made while you wait.

Paolo’s also has pizzas, a coffee bar so there’s something for everyone. Then grab a seat in the café to enjoy your meal. It’s also worth noting that Paolo’s will be serving brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am – 3 pm and if the food on the menu tastes as good as it sounds, you’re in for a treat. Some to try: Nutella French toast, a breakfast pizza or ricotta pancakes.

Listen, it’s not like Bergen County doesn’t have its fair share of good Italian places. But Paolo’s is a great addition - the marketplace concept feels fresh and current and the food is delish. Plus, your family will get fed and you don’t have to clean up after. What could be bad about that?
