Looking for a fresh place to score your Taco Tuesday fix? Los Compadres, a new Tex-Mex joint in Fort Lee, is drawing standing-room-only crowds—and not just because there’s only four seats in the whole place.
We dropped in recently to get our crunch on (to-go), and quickly understood the appeal of this little place. After all, the team behind it is the same one that’s killing it with Mood ‘Wiches, which means this isn’t your average artery-clogging affair. Everything on the menu—from tacos ($3+) to burritos ($8+) to build-your-own bowls ($8+) and beyond—are made with only the highest quality non-GMO, grass-fed, and gluten-free ingredients.
The wait wasn’t all that long (order ahead of time, if you’re in a rush), and besides, it gave us a chance to figure out exactly what we wanted. We decided on a Carnitas Torta ($8), which impressed with its generous mix of telera bread, refried beans, guacamole, queso oaxaca, onion, crema, pickled jalapenos, pasilla, lettuce, tomato, and cilantro. Of course, we also had to try the tacos, so we had them add a Carne Asada-style one ($5) to our tally. We’re not sure if it was the heirloom corn tortilla it was served in or the perfectly prepared steak inside, but it was definitely a winner.
Folks, street food just got fabulous.
