WHAT:  Harvestfest at Stone Barns Center
WHY:  You’re husband thinks your apple pie is great, but will the judges?  Put it to the test in the Seasonal Pie-Bake Off.  Or take the kids to the Raptor Show or Farm Olympics.  Tons of family fun with food, a live band, hayrides and farmers market, all only a half hour from Bergen.  (tickets can be purchased online)

WHERE:  Stone Barns Center, 630 Bedford Road, Pocantico Hills, NY

WHAT: Bronx Zoo “Boo at the Zoo”
WHY:  Honestly, what’s scarier than a live bat or snake?  Bring a kid in costume and they get in free (children under 3 are free as well) and let them play in the hay maze, carve pumpkins, and embark on a haunted safari. 
WHEN: October 2–3, 9–11, 16–17, 23–24 & 30–31
WHERE: The Bronx Zoo

WHAT: “The Zoo Comes to You” at Palisades Interstate Park
WHY: No giraffes, but tons of other animals to touch and feel (tickets $2)
WHEN:  Sunday, October 3rd, 45 minute shows, 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm
WHERE:  State Line Lookout, on the Palisades in Alpine (opposite exit 3)

WHAT: Hackensack’s 5th Annual Street Festival
WHY:  Yes, Hackensack has great shopping, but it also has a great street festival, including a classic car show, rides, food vendors, petting zoo and more.
WHEN: Saturday, October 2nd, 10:00am to 6:00pm
WHERE: Main Street between Atlantic and Passaic

WHAT: Ramaquois Fall “Camp fest” Open House
WHY:  It’s the perfect weekend for one last summer fling

WHY:  At $29.95 for a pre-fixe dinner, fettuccini never tasted so good.
