Two Scrumptious Reasons to Cross the Border

 /

Of course we all love Bergen: great shops, proximity to the city, good schools.  But there is a little secret Bergenites like to keep between us.  Sometimes, once in a blue moon, we like to venture to Rockland to dine.  Our neighbors to the north really know how to serve up some yummy fare.  They know good wines too.  So next time you feel like traveling across state lines, check out what these two new eateries are cooking up in their kitchens.

Where:  Café Barcel, Nyack, New York
Why:  Because this less than one year old Latin-influenced new American café serves up some of the best cuisine this side of the Hudson.  And really where else can you sample food from a chef schooled at The Water Club and Union Square Cafe this close to home.
When: On a beautiful summer or fall evening, when the windows are open to the street and the live Latin band is humming in the background.
Try: The Yellow Fin Tuna Tartar or the Mozzarella Speidini appetizer.  As a main course, Salmon a la Plancha with Sweet Corn or Grilled Hangar Steak with just the right amount of spice.  Don’t miss the sugar dusted Bunuelos (Spanish donuts) for dessert.
Imbibe: A Spanish Syrah or house-made Mojito will complement any dish.

Where:  Coppola’s, Sparkill, New York
Why:  Because we’ve been watching the beautiful stand-alone Italian bistro come together for over a year and it’s just a stone’s throw from Bergen.
When: On the early side, with the family or later with the hubby on the outdoor patio. Or rent the upstairs for a private party; complete with its own bar and balconies.
Try:  The Calamari Fritti appetizer and one of the many pastas or pizzas.  Don’t miss the meatballs or made-to-order chocolate soufflé for dessert.
Imbibe:  A quartino of Chianti or Sangiovese of course

So next time you’re hungry for some good grub or just a night on the town, cross the border.  Or better yet, make a run for it.
