Hungry for some delightful children’s theater designed especially for the little ones? Beloved author and illustrator Eric Carle has captivated three generations of readers with his distinctive collage-style art and iconic storytelling, and now The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show has come to the 47th Street Theatre in a 60-minute performance that is perfect for toddlers and kids of all ages.
Our very own Bergen Mama activities editor, Melanie, recently attended a performance with her two sons, Vance, 3, and Porter, age 4 months, and here is what she had to say:
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar show was as charming as children's theater gets. It was simple but magical and the 60-minute length was the perfect length of time for toddlers. Vance loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar book and all of Eric Carle's characters, so he clapped with excitement and yelled out what animals they were as they were brought on stage. All the kids were on the edge of their seats. Even Porter sat on our laps the entire time and watched the show without making a peep! There were four actors performing on stage, but the real stars of the show were the iconic animals brought to life as puppets. Their colors and size were mesmerizing for the kids. By the time the caterpillar and the beautiful butterfly came on stage, there was so much excitement in the theater. The entire show is well paced and contains the right elements of surprise that children really respond to. My husband, Gerard, and I enjoyed it too! I highly recommend this delightful performance.
Created by critically acclaimed producer Jonathan Rockefeller, this U.S. premiere features a menagerie of 75 enchanting puppets that faithfully adapts four of Eric Carle’s beloved books for the stage: The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse, Mister Seahorse, The Very Lonely Firefly and, of course, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show runs through April 17th, 2016 at the 47th Street Theatre (304 W 47th St.) and tickets are $49.50 -$65.50 at ticketcentral.com or by calling 212.279.4200. For more information, visit HungryCaterpillarShow.com.
