Englewood Hospital Takes on the Top Killer of Student Athletes

Services  /

Every three days, a student athlete in the United States dies from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. SCA is the #1 killer of student athletes in the United States and statistics show that about 1 in 100 children has an undetected heart condition. These heart conditions are often treatable and manageable, but they must first be diagnosed.

At this free screening event at Stillman Elementary in Tenafly on March 12, made possible through the generous support of Simon’s Fund, a Philadelphia based non-profit that has conducted over 12,000 screenings, the new Protect A Heart Committee of Tenafly comprised of parents, school board members and support from the Tenafly Home School Association (H.S.A.), several local cardiologists, and Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, physicians, EKG and echocardiogram techs will conduct the screenings, and EMT and CPR instructors will teach attendees how to perform CPR and other life-saving skills and techniques.

“Screenings like these emphasize the importance of prevention and early intervention,” says Phyllis Brown-Edwards, director of community affairs for Englewood Hospital. “For people who want to take a more proactive approach to their health and the health of their loved ones, it’s an opportunity to eliminate concern or identify diseases or issues that may have otherwise gone undetected.”

Screenings will be straightforward and easy (approximately 30 minutes) consisting of a medical history form (completed online in advance with your registration), a brief physical exam, and an electrocardiogram (EKG).

Registration (which is currently at capacity) is required in advance by appointment only at www.simonsfund.org, and a parent or legal guardian must be present during the event. To be added to the waitlist, follow the link and calendar and then follow the information on the Tenafly event.

Help protect the hearts of our children before it’s too late.
