Ramsey’s Asylum Fight Gym

Fitness  /

The hottest new workout to hit Northern Bergen? Fighting.

And of course why wouldn’t you want to blow out all that pent up aggression in the ring (vs. on your screaming tot and his sassy tween sis.).

Enter Asylum Fight Gym in Ramsey, where local mamas are punching and kicking out their stress, and scoring cut up arms and abs in the process.  We sent fitness editor Helaine Kay into the ring to find out how the workout stacks up.

As a former professional fighter who fought all over Asia, Phil Dunlap is no stranger to the ring.  Asylum Fight Gym’s buff owner is skilled in Burmese Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts and a host of other fighting styles and after years of training competitive fighters, wanted to bring his craft mainstream - to fitness hungry local mamas, who he thought could benefit from the amazing conditioning as well as the mental focus earned by trainees.

And they are coming in droves.  The appeal?  Actual MMA fighters teaching the classes, so that clients get a taste of an authentic training experience.  Phil and his instructors run “informal” classes more like a team practices, but still intense enough that an average kickboxing workout burns over 850 calories.  Clients can choose from Burmese Boxing, Fitness Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Sambo, all taught in their hardcore fighter gym, complete with an octagonal cage.  Most clients start out kickboxing, and then look to add more sophisticated fighting techniques to their workouts when they want to mix it up.
