Whether it’s the carpool (putting on a full face of makeup at every red light from Tenafly to Northvale) routine or the preparing a home cooked dinner (while answering 100 emails and texts and giving the baby a bottle) routine, you’re pretty much an expert at cramming a lot of things into an hour. So when you give up 60 precious minutes of your day to work out, you want a calorie burning, muscle toning, fast-paced workout that will give your body the most bang for its exercise buck.

Looking at the Studio’s non-descript facade at 10 Jay Street in Tenafly, you would never know that it contains the largest collection of Pilates equipment in the area, or that it’s a certified Stott Pilates training center. And we admit that we were a little skeptical of owner Gina Santangelo’s claim that she could design a two, three or four day program that could transform clients’ physiques. But after an Xtend Barre Class, a Semi-Private Pilates session, and speaking to (gawking at) her followers, we saw her point.
Xtend Barre class was a heart thumping, fast paced series of isometrics that taxed our muscles but was actually, dare we say, fun. The ballet and Pilates based program burns between 500 and 700 calories per class, and can seriously change your body (did you see devotee Natalie Portman in Black Swan?). But when it comes to using the machines, only serious subjects need apply. The Studio requires each student be “schooled or observed” by one of their certified instructors prior to joining the intimate Pilates classes which are limited to eight people- specifically designed so the instructor can ensure your form is no less than perfect.
So get your butt kicked when you spend an hour doing your sculpt the arms-flatten the abs- tighten the glutes- routine at The Callanetics and Pilates Studio in Tenafly, you little multi-tasker you.
