We all know we should be doing more to keep the earth inhabitable for humans. But it’s a lot of hard work and we never really see the impact of our decisions anyway. Until now. Arcadia Earth, the “hauntingly beautiful” and “stunning” temporary art installation that gives guests an immersive look at the impact of ecological and environmental issues, has opened in New York and it’s completely worth the trip.
The 18-room multi-sensory journey uses augmented reality, virtual reality, projection mapping and interactive environments to highlight issues like overfishing, plastic pollution, deforestation and climate change in installations created by top environmental artists and using upcycled and recycled materials. Spend time under the sea and witness the shrinking of the coral beds. Walk through a cave crafted from 44,000 plastic bags, the number of bags used every minute by New Yorkers. Witness the plastic jellyfish and fishing nets.
Go ahead and post on Instagram (this place is too cool not to) but then take a moment to check out the actions suggested along the way and, at the end of your visit, sign the petition and commit yourself to one or two actions that can help. They’ll even give you a freebie to start you off – a tree will be planted for every ticket sold. And proceeds from ticket sales will go to Oceanic Global, an organization that raises awareness for how humans are harming the aquatic ecosystem.
Arcadia Earth is at 718 Broadway and is open through January 2020. Tickets are $33 for adults, $27 for students and $12 for kids ages 6 – 14. Tickets can be purchased on the website.
