You’ve done the apple picking, you’ve eaten your body weight in pumpkin spice everything, and yet it’s the weekend again, and you’re wondering how to entertain the kids in a way that will make the whole family happy. If you haven’t been to Liberty Science Center lately, now is the time to make a return trip. There are amazing new things to do there this fall. So much, in fact, that you might have to plan more than one visit to truly experience all they have to offer.
Starting on September 23 and running through May 13, 2018, Thomas and Friends: Explore the Rails is pulling into the station. This special exhibit, appropriate for children ages 3 to 8, gives your little ones early exposure to age appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) concepts. Your budding engineer will be able to spend some time in Thomas’ cab, then solve a variety of challenges on their way to becoming Really Useful. They can help Percy with his wobbly wheel, load up his coal box, and dress up as a conductor, changing money, checking a schedule and testing the best tracks for various terrains. Then, make sure to save time for the giant train table with destinations like Tidmouth Sheds, Brendam Docks and the Sodor Search and Rescue Station. Thomas and Friends: Explore the Rails is free with your admission to LSC.
For the big kids in the group (yes, we are including parents in that description) Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience, opening on October 28 and running through May 28, 2018, will make even those who have never thrilled to the words, “live long and prosper” into a diehard Trekkie. Full of Star Trek “artifacts,” this exhibit turns visitors into Starfleet Academy cadets and puts them through a series of challenges to determine whether their ultimate assignment on the Enterprise will be as a member of the Language, Medical, Navigation, Engineering, Starship Command or Science Corps. Strap on your RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) bracelets and complete challenges such as using gesture control to navigate space vessels, learning to speak Klingon, and operating tricorders in order to identify and diagnose the ailments of two Klingon mannequins. Use real-live Star Trek phasers for target practice, and try your hand at commanding the ship, protecting your crew and fending off an attack on the ship’s bridge. You can even have your photo taken in the captain’s chair and beam yourself to another planet in a transponder. Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience is available to visitors with a premium ticket.
Plus, Liberty Science Center is putting the finishing touches on their new planetarium, slated to be the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The project to refit the IMAX dome with a new screen and digital system upgrades is almost complete. You and your family will soon be able to travel the cosmos learning about the stars and constellations and enjoy new laser shows. The opening date for this amazing new addition will be announced soon.
