Back-to-School Like a Functional Mama

Services  /

Let’s be honest: back-to-school season hits like a freight train. New routines, early mornings, and plenty of shared germs. But with a little intention (and a few time-tested tools), you can fortify your whole family — and yourself — from the inside out.

In our continued collaboration with locally based Beckon Prosperity – a holistic practice focused on kids and family - here are some of our favorite functional, natural ways to keep everyone healthy, sharp, and centered this season:

DIY Antiviral Honey Elixir (for the Whole Family)

This one’s a fall staple in our homes — especially when noses start to run and immune systems get tested. The jar will be a mainstay on our countertop and dosed out to all family members!

Inspired by herbal traditions, this immune-boosting elixir is made with raw honey (1 cup), lemon (cleaned and sliced), garlic cloves (3 to 5 chopped), and ginger (1 tablespoon minced) ingredients known for their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. Just chop, mix, infuse for 3 days, strain and bottle up, and take 1–2 teaspoons daily. Bonus: you can stir it into warm water or tea for a comforting drink. * Since it’s honey-based, don’t give this to children under the age of 1 *

Brain + Body Support for Kids

Longer school days mean more mental strain, and a well-supported nervous system makes a world of difference. Our top daily helpers:

  • DHA (Omega-3s): Supports brain development, memory, and focus
  • Magnesium Glycinate: Best given in the evening to calm the nervous system and improve sleep
  • Propolis or saline nasal spray: Use at night to help clear out mold, viruses, and pollutants from school air (yes, mold in school buildings is real — and rampant.

Your New Lice Prevention Protocol

Lice season always sneaks up on us. Here’s how to stay ahead of it — naturally:

  • Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your child’s regular shampoo
  • Mix tea tree, mint, and water into a small spray bottle
  • Spritz hair, hoods, and backpacks before heading out the door

And Don’t Forget… Mom Matters Too

Back to school isn’t just a transition for kids — it’s one for you too. And staying grounded doesn’t require an hour-long routine. Even 3 minutes of stillness can reset your whole day.

We’re loving Insight Timer — an app with thousands of meditations (ranging from 3 minutes to 2 hours), daily challenges, and soul-nourishing workshops. Think of it as your nervous system’s new best friend. Because you’re not just the schedule keeper. You’re the anchor. And your presence is your power.

So, if the first week back has already steamrolled you — deep breath. This season is a lot. But you’re not alone in the whirlwind. Whether it’s a countertop honey jar, a quick spray before drop-off, or a 3-minute meditation in your parked car, these little rituals add up.

Here’s to every mama riding the freight train and still showing up!
