10 Things to Do Before Summer Ends in Bergen County, NJ

Day Trips  /
Don't look now but school supplies, turtleneck sweaters, and pumpkin potholders are already out on store shelves. But that doesn't mean summer's over. We still have weeks and weeks (and weeks!) of hot temps, daylight stretching well into evening, and whatever summer fun you want to pack in. Here, 10 things you absolutely must do before the season ends. Now go out there and make these final, fleeting days count.

Hit the beach. Whether you’re heading out for one day or a few, pack a cooler, some suits and the kids and head to one of our favorite beaches on the Jersey shore.

Outdoor dining is about to get chill(ier). Grab your gaggle and book a reso at one of these delicious spots to eat al fresco.

Rosé all day. While we wouldn’t say NJ is like a visit to Napa, the Garden State still has it’s share of vineyards that produce some perfectly drinkable wines coupled with grape vine views. Head to Unionville Vineyards, Alba Vineyard or Laurita Winery for a tasting and a picnic.

Hit the waves. Teens (or their keepers) who crave the extreme can get a lift at Superfly NJ. More mellow water sports like canoe and kayaking can be found at Hackensack Riverkeeper, or try renting some paddleboards on Ringwood’s serene Greenwood Lake.

Eat Lobster. We’ve been gabbing about the new Mitchell’s Fish Market in Edgewater with it’s great for groups tables and jaw dropping views. Yet we still love the super casual vibe and authentic lobster rolls at Jack’s Lobster Shack in Edgewater. But if you’re heading across the Hudson, definitely check out Manhattan’s North River Lobster Company for great eeeeats and strong cocktails.

Take in the views. Skip the toll traffic and opt for the NY Waterway Ferry ride instead- with Hudson views, kids riding free and no parking woes, you won’t miss the car ride one bit. Stroller pushers will love the gorgeous walks and easy food truck eats on Pier C in Hoboken. Or let them play all day with the city skyline backdrop at Liberty State Park’s huge playground.

Eat Icey Treats. Because, summer. And that’s why we made this list of our favorite inst-worthy summer treats.

Visit a Waterpark. Good news- NJ has TONS of cool spots to beat the summer heat. Sahara Sam’s is an obvious favorite and just added on a new great addition. Hurricane Harbor (part of Six Flags) is a great end to a long day on the dry rides. Easy-to-get-to splash pads can be found at Van Saun Park’s playground when you want to stay close to home.

Eat Corn. Whether it’s Jersey Corn or not, we’re not here to judge, but summer just isn’t summer without an ear of the good stuff. Celebrate the favorite BBQ veggie by navigating around the always-amazing Corn Maze at Alstede Farms (slated to open on August 26th). Or hop across the Hudson and check out CORNucopia at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow – an all day festival with hands on activities and scarecrows who have come to life.

Going to the Zoo.  You still have time to catch the graceful giraffe’s at Turtle Back Zoo, and courageous kids will love the new Shark Bridge at Adventure Aquarium in Camden. Or stay closer to home and spend the day toiling away at Liberty Science Center which hosts live animal encounters all day long.
