They’re Baaaack: Drive-in Movie Theaters Make a Return to Bergen County

Day Trips  /

We’ve all probably watched more movies in the past 2 months than we have all year. As the temperature outside heats up, most of us are itching to get out of our houses in any safe way possible. The solution? Drive-in movie theaters, which are quickly making a comeback after being obsolete for decades. Bergen County is ramping up to bring back drive-in movie theaters to add some excitement – and a change of scenery – to your life. Time to get stranded at the drive-in.

Now that Governor Murphy is lifting restrictions on some businesses, pop up drive-in theater options are being built to cure the COVID blues, at least temporarily. Parking app Boxcar is partnering with a movie production company to offer drive-in movies in Franklin Lakes, with the first yet-to-be-determined flick on June 6. If you're looking for a longer ride and more time out, head to Madison, NJ on May 29 for a showing of the classic The Princess Bride. Be sure to snag your tix in advance through their app or online.

Additionally, 6ft Cinemas, created to appease social distancing orders and entertain families one classic film at a time, is preparing for a June opening in Bergen County. The company is promising a large outdoor screen, plus food trucks, concessions, a bar and more. Family-friendly and PG-13 flicks will be played, a necessity since babysitters are hardly an option now. Sign up on their website for pre-sale information and specifics about location and dates, and enjoy a summer of film under the stars.

Demarest Farms, which at this time of year is usually ramping up for its pick your own season, is switching gears and jumping on the drive-in theater train. Details are scant for now, but opening day is set for June 11. Stay tuned on their social media pages for updates on times, tickets and showings, as they sell out fast.
