Sure nine months in the school year seems adequate, until you start thinking about all the learning your kids have to cram into those months and then, to paraphrase the illustrious Willy Wonka, it starts to feel like there’s so much knowledge and so little time. So, if your kid is feeling the need to give themselves a head start on their next academic year, or if they want to free up space for electives in their schedule next year, or if they need to catch up or fill in some gaps, or if they just want to avoid the summer slide and keep their brains active in those three months when they’re not in school, the Saddle River Day School Summer Academy at Saddle River Day School in Saddle River, New Jersey, is probably the place for them.
At the Saddle River Day School Summer Academy, your child will be able to maximize their learning and optimize their time in a summer of growth and creativity. At SRDS Summer Academy, your child will have the choice of full-credit, semester-credit, or elective courses at both Honors and college preparatory levels.
In the full-credit advancement and elective classes, students currently enrolled at SRDS will earn 3 credits on their SRDS transcripts upon successful completion of the class. Non-SRDS students should check with their schools for transfer credit requirements. Full-credit advancement courses will be offered in mathematics, the sciences, and languages. Full-credit elective classes are offered in Anatomy & Physiology, Astronomy, Environmental Science, Professional Science: Introduction to the Research Process, Marine Biology, and Graphic Arts. Full-Credit Courses will run from June 23, 2024 through July 30, 2025. SRDS will be closed from July 3-4, 2025 in recognition of Independence Day. Final exams will take place on July 30, 2025.
If your child chooses to take a semester-credit class, they can develop their writing and study skills and unleash their creativity in classes like Research and Writing, The Writer’s Workshop, Speech and Debate, Philosophy, and Leadership. They will earn 1.5 credits on SRDS transcripts upon successful completion. Non-SRDS students should check with their schools for transfer credit requirements.
But if your child just wants to challenge their mind, delve deeper into an identified interest, prepare for upcoming college entrance exams when they have a little less on their plates, or try something brand new, non-credit enrichment classes are the way to go. Each non-credit enrichment course will run on a week-long basis. Please visit the website to view the full schedule of classes and read the full description of each course. Courses offered include: pre-chemistry, pre-AP History, pre-High School study skills, Design Thinking, Cooking and Baking, The Genius Hour, Financial Literacy in the 21st Century, Stop-Motion Animation, and SAT/ACT Prep classes in both Reading and Math. There are even enrichment classes for the middle schoolers who want to strengthen their grammar, vocabulary, and writing or who want to extend their summer reading and hone their critical analysis skills by reading scenes from famous comedies and dramas.
So yes, go ahead and relax the school year schedule a little bit, but keep their brains active (and their eyes off their phones) with a class or two at Saddle River Day School that will entertain and educate them, even when they least suspect it! Saddle River Day School Summer Academy will run from Monday, June 23rd through Wednesday, July 30th for SRDS and non-SRDS students. Please see course descriptions for specific course dates and times. Registration is open now and is offered on a first come, first served basis. Tuition for each course is dependent on the credit value and duration of the class. Sign up now and know you’ve done your part to make sure all the knowledge they gained during the school year will stay right there in their big brains over the summer.
