Last Minute Summer Day Trips Near Bergen County, NJ

Day Trips  /

With school just days away, now is the perfect time for a final, last-minute day trip to cap off an…interesting summer. Bergen County is surrounded by many easy day-trip destinations that celebrate nature and will feel like a true escape from reality, if only for the day. Grab your masks and go on an adventure.

The Walkway Over the Hudson, known as the world’s longest elevated pedestrian bridge, brings eye-popping views without needing to climb to high. Push your stroller, ride your bike or walk around the manageable loop just over a mile. When you’re finished sweating it out, head over to Shadows on the Hudson for outdoor dining on the Hudson River, and don’t miss their Sunday brunch.

If you want to really get closer to nature, head south to Bushkill Falls in the Pocono Mountains. Be sure to keep your camera handy for this all-in-one attraction. Whether you have young kids or teens, Bushkill offers trails of every level of difficulty and length – little legs will appreciate the 15 minute trail with equally scenic views. And for those looking to do more than take a hike, Bushkill also offers mini golf, paddle boat rides, fishing and much more.

Spend a day on the water at Indian Head Canoes & Rafts in Barryville, NY. Daily rafting, canoeing, kayaking and tubing trips are available, and the slower current is perfect for more novice water-goers (think: small sections of minor rapids). Trips range from an hour to a full day. Delaware Water Gap also offers boating adventures, or for those who prefer land to sea, mountain bikes are available to rent. Bring a picnic and enjoy a bite on the islands.

For a final trip to the beach, wave hi to Avon by the Sea. The shallow water makes this  beach a good option for young kids, plus it’s easy to maintain social distancing as it doesn’t get too crowded during the week. Be sure to buy your tickets the morning before you go.

Get a whiff of beauty at the New York Botanical Gardens, which opened its doors to the rose garden, water lilies, native plant garden and more floral greatness. Grab a bite at the Pine Tree Café, and if the kids still have some energy, check out nearby Bronx Zoo Treetop Adventure. Zipline over the Bronx River and navigate the aerial ropes course perfect for adults and kids over age 7.

Hidden deep in the woods of Essex County is the South Mountain Fairy Trail. Walk down the trail lined with miniature houses, constructed mostly of natural materials – acorn chairs, twig ladders and moss bed. Located in the South Mountain Reservation of Essex, this is a must-see for mystical fairy-loving kids.

Take an escape with or without the kids to Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery. Grab some apples to start -- apple picking starts Saturday, August 29. Then, relax at the winery and enjoy scenic outdoor dining and wining, plus live music.
