Day Trips and Staycations in and Around Bergen County

Day Trips  /

So, you may have had to put off that Aruba getaway for at least another few months. While some of your travel plans may not be what you hoped for this spring break, there are still plenty of staycation ideas in and around Bergen County to satisfy everyone from tots to teens. Whether you’re looking for a day trip drive, quick overnight getaway or local entertainment, these staycations have you covered.

American Dream Right in our own backyard lives a wonderland of amusements, shopping, dining and so much more. Hit the slopes at the first indoor snow resort Big Snow or get your feet wet at Dreamworks Water Park. Experience thrills at Nickelodeon Universe, practice your put at Angry Birds Mini Golf or take a skate around the Rink. Plus, look out for American Dream’s Sea Life Aquarium and LEGOLAND Discover Center which both are set to open May 4!

Liberty Science Center Just because school’s out doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. Liberty Science Center offers fun for a variety of ages with the ever-changing exhibits, regular attractions and shows at the planetarium. Younger kids will love visiting Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood in the Grr-ific Exhibit, while all will be blown away by the new Boom Time show featuring liquid nitrogen explosions. Plus, from March 27-May 9, LSC is throwing a Wild About Animals celebration with a butterfly house, safari challenge, animal laser show and more animalistic fun.

Mohonk Mountain House While not quite a staycation, right in the Hudson Valley lives a Victorian castle resort that will make you feel like you’ve traveled the distance. Outdoor adventurers will love the incredible views found on the 85 miles of hiking trails, health enthusiasts can escape to enjoy yoga and restorative flow, while kids will enjoy fishing, scavenger hunts and exploring the maze.

Sesame Place Take a drive to Sesame Street where the littles will get their thrills partying with Elmo and friends. During the spring break season, kids can enjoy Elmo’s Eggstravaganza Easter Celebration. Dry rides, special live shows with favorite characters and surprise mini-parades are just part of the fun. Take pics with the Easter Bunny or take part in the Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt to receive a prize to make the kids hoppy.

Nature Hop Have a nature day or two exploring the outside world around Bergen County. The Meadowlands Environmental Center in Lyndhurst offers trails and guided nature walks, including a DeKorte Park guided walk and watch for early spring migrants, ducks and raptors (Sunday April 4, 10 am-12 pm). Flat Rock Brook in Englewood provides more than 3 miles of self-guided hiking trails plus wetlands, ponds and meadows. The Ramapo Valley Reservation features five loop trails that include beautiful views, a pond and waterfall. Bring your pet for this pup-friendly spot. Or head a bit further to Harriman-Bear Mountain State Park’s hiking trails. Bonus: Stop by the Trailside Museum & Zoo on April 17th for an Earth Day Celebration with the Bears. For a beautiful sight, take a ride to the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival in Branch Brook Park as the beautiful trees bloom for the year

Animal Visits Spending time with animals is an easy way to provide a little education and a lot of excitement. The Barnyard Petting Zoo at Abma’s Farm is home to goats, sheep, alpaca, ponies, bunnies, pigs and more. At Alstede Farms, friendly farm animals including horses, goats, sheep and donkeys are waiting to be fed. For a different animal experience, check out the BATCAVE at the WILD Life! Conservation Center. Get an up-close look at bats, mini pigs, sloths and more animal friends with NJ’s own Batman.

NYC Adventures A day in the city can still bring safe fun for all ages. Slime-obsessed kids can get their goo-on at the Sloomoo Institute, where you can customize slime, and even get slimed yourself. Take a walk on The High Line, NYC’s public park built on a raised rail structure, and experience the city from a new perspective.
