Why yes, we are in the middle of a polar vortex but if you can stop shivering for long enough to look at your calendar, you’ll see that summer is only a few short months away. You know you want your kids to have time to relax and have fun once the school year ends, but you also don’t want them to lose the knowledge and skills they’ve worked so hard to gain. The Summer Explorations camp at The Elisabeth Morrow School in Englewood, New Jersey, is the perfect solution.
Summer Explorations is a unique blend of camp and school, offering a wide variety of opportunities for learning and fun for students ages 2 through ninth grade. Taking full advantage of Elisabeth Morrow’s beautiful 14-acre wildlife-certified wooded campus, the Summer Explorations program enables students to spend time outside each day on EMS’s three playgrounds, turf playing field, and then, heading inside to work in the state-of-the-art science and tech labs.
The Summer Explorations Early Childhood Program for students ages 2–first grade includes developmentally appropriate weekly themes, classroom activities, and outdoor learning time. Teachers help students connect to the topics and engage in authentic learning experiences through planned activities and experiences. This summer, weekly themes will focus on different parts of the world and students will explore the animals, weather, culture, traditions, and food from each area.
Students in second grade through sixth grade are offered the opportunity to choose two workshops each morning. Students can choose to deepen their knowledge and improve their skills in established areas of interest, or, they can use these workshops as a chance to try something brand new. Workshop topics include: science, drama, animation, coding, sports, nature exploration, art, writing, robotics, and much more. The 90-minute morning workshops give students time to explore, develop, and finalize a project. In the afternoon, students will begiven the choice to participate in classes including: arts and crafts, sports, science, and drama. Students gain confidence in themselves as they learn new skills and develop their interests.
Seventh through ninth graders will have the unique opportunity to be Leaders in Training (LIT), learning about the developmental stages of children, strategizing and discussing the best ways to work with kids at each age level, and spending time with the younger students in a classroom setting. Supervised by the dedicated, caring, experienced EMS teachers, students in the LIT program work on developing cooperation, team building, and leadership skills.
Summer Explorations will run from June 24–Aug. 2, 2024. The Elisabeth Morrow School offers a flexible schedule of half or full-day options and enrollment is on a week-by-week basis, enabling you to choose the program option that best fits into your schedule.
