Stop Winter Illness in Its Tracks: 5 Pro Tips for Parents

Wellness  /

Of course it’s terrible when your kid is sick. No parent ever wants to see their child in discomfort or pain. But let’s be honest, it’s also a giant pain in the neck to have your well-planned schedule come to a screeching halt while you take your kid to the doctor, then play doctor at home. Obviously, every kid is going to get sick sometimes, but according to Beckon Prosperity, the new integrative family health practice in Bergen County, New Jersey, there are lots of things you can do to prevent those fevers, flus, colds, sore throats, and stomach bugs from taking hold in your family, and lots more things you can do to shorten those illnesses when they do make their unwelcome appearance.

Here are their Top 5 Tips to Telling Winter Bugs To Buzz Off + an invitation to their Fullscript Dispensary with a ready to go bundle at 20% off:

1. Watch What You Eat. Winter is a time to eat warm foods like soups, bone broths, chili, roasted vegetables, crockpot recipes, spices and herbs. One herb to try, if you’re feeling really adventurous, is a drop or two of Oregano Oil to the back of the throat at the first sign of a sore throat. But brace for impact – oregano oil is spicy! A solid probiotic will keep the gut healthy, which is step one in avoiding any kind of illness. Then, make it a habit to send your family out the door each morning, warmed by shots of Bone Broth which can help jump start their immune system. Add a second line of defense to that immunity with fruits and veggies in their packed snacks. But what to do about the fact that your ravenous kids come home in the afternoons and devour snacks that are short on nutrients and long on calories and sugar? One thing more and more parents are moving to is a crockpot meal ready to roll with a nutritious balance of good carbs and protein, served right when the kiddos come home from school.

2. Beware of the Belly. Well, you tried your best, but the norovirus caught up to your family. The best thing you can do is mix Peppermint Essential Oil with water in a small spray bottle and use it on infected bedrooms, coats, and backpacks. Peppermint oil can also help fight nausea when sprayed on the hands and under the nose so it can be easily inhaled. As soon as someone in your family goes down, start everyone on Activated Charcoal to help flush the stomach bug, not only from the sick one but also from everyone else who has been exposed. Then, try to give your child Electrolyte Gummies. It’ll keep them hydrated and you’ll be the cool mom handing out the sweet treat.  If the flu hits, or you even hear about it in a classroom near you, Guna Flu is a homeopathic must-stock to kick into rotation.

3. Give Sniffles the Cold Shoulder. Your kid’s in the other room but you can hear them sneezing from where you are. If you haven’t been dosing them regularly with Propolis Nasal Spray, it’s time to bust it out. Propolis spray will keep sinuses clear of germs but it will also clear nasal passages if you’re congested. And with the dropper option build an easy evening dosing ritual as everyone is busy binge-watching their shows and getting through homework. “Open up” is a common phrase from this mom as I walk through the house dispensing a droplet to each family member. They barely notice!

4. Don’t Forget the Salt. Epsom Salt Baths, with Eucalyptus Essential Oils, help to detox ailing bodies while also calming the nervous system so that the immune system can take a breather.  Level up with my favorite meditation app, Insight Timer. It has options that run as little as 5 mins to encourage much needed mindful time-outs, for humans big and small while they soak, or to keep the relaxation going after your bath is over.  While on the salt subject, keeping salt and dixie cups in each bathroom is a subtle reminder to gargle while washing up. You can clean the germs off your hands and out of your throat with one trip to the sink!

5. Just Breathe. Easier said than done when congestion sets in. But get out the nebulizer you used for your babies because it’s still one of the most effective ways to clear up nasal, throat, and respiratory infections in kids AND adults.  Beckon Prosperity’s favorite nebulizing solution is Dr. Burd’s Wonder Spray. Use it for 10 minutes as soon as symptoms start and you’ll relieve discomfort and stop that cold in its tracks. If you’re headed out of town (lucky duck!) there are super quiet handheld nebulizers and Wonder Spray comes in travel sizes so you are never caught off-guard and you can offset the dry air in most hotel rooms.

BONUS TIP: A word about herbs: they have so many medicinal properties but it’s also confusing to figure out what to use and when. Beckon Prosperity has been studying the benefits of herbs for years and can help you make a plan.
