Are You Ready for Spring Break at Liberty Science Center? (dedicated)

Day Trips  /

Climbing the walls yet? Get to Liberty Science Center, STAT!

So, you went to Liberty Science Center last year and you’re not sure you should go again? Listen to us. You should go again. From the easy to navigate ticket queue to the exciting new exhibits, to the old stand-bys, your day will fly by and you’ll be wishing you had more time (or just a fresh set of legs from all your walking). Want to know what you should do first? Try one of these five fabulous new exhibits. But be sure to leave time to visit the naked mole rats, giant bubble maker and the Infinity Climber before you leave.

Enter the new Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium and look up. And up. And up. There is no doubt that this is the largest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere, and you are in for a treat. Choose a show, film or laser show under the giant dome including Wonders of the Night Sky. LSC’s all-live signature show is a 45-minute experience that allows viewers to see the galaxy as it appears to the naked eye and then zoom off to explore the cosmos in amazing detail. See infant stars in their beautiful glowing nebula nurseries, dying stars becoming black holes, and more. Or, head To Worlds Beyond.  A live presenter shows you where to find planets and other objects in the night skies, then takes you deep into space for a closer look. And for the littlest astrophysicists, One World, One Sky enlists Big Bird, Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, to teach kids about the Big Dipper, the North Star and more. Programs run throughout the day and are available starting at the Combination Pass Level. Shows sell out, so arrive early for the best selection.

When they are back on Earth, youngsters ages 2-5 can learn about smart choices at "Liberty Grocery Store." Playing with lots of fun toy foods in our I Explore store, they’ll stock the shelves, run the cash register and help count money. LSC educators will help them learn how to select yummy and nutritious things to eat. Free with admission. Daily 10:30-12 and 2:30-4. Ages 2-5.

Or, add more in-depth science to your weekend. Liberty Science Center is all ready to drop some knowledge during the Family Weekend Exploration Series. Upcoming sessions explore the topics of environmental disasters (Oh no, Oil Spill!), bridge design (Bridging the Gap), and the mechanics of flight (Aviation Destination). Offered on select Saturdays from 10-12:30. $25/pp, $20/per LSC member. Reservations suggested. Call 201.253.1310 to reserve.

For the train obsessed, drop by and explore the exhibit, Thomas & FriendsTM: Explore the Rails. Climb into Thomas' cab to sound the horn, solve challenges to become really useful, fix Percy's wobbly wheels, and sell tickets and make change. You can even explore the Island of Sodor on a giant Thomas train table. Hurry, show leaves soon! Free with admission.

Before you call it a day, find out where you would be stationed on Star Trek’s Starship Enterprise at The Starfleet Academy Experience. Complete challenges in Language, Medicine, Navigation, Engineering, Starship Command and Science Corps and your RFID wristband will record your results. Beam yourself onboard from another planet in the transponder, indulge in some phaser target practice and make sure to get a photo of yourself in the Captain’s chair. Then at the end, you’ll be given your assignment for all future space flights. Available with a premium ticket.

As always, check Today at LSC on LSC.org before your visit. Things change often!
