North Jersey Is On Its Way to Becoming the Science Mecca of the U.S.

Day Trips  /

We Jerseyites know that our state rules when it comes to lots of stuff – our gorgeous beaches, fabulous summer produce (we're already dreaming of next year's Jersey corn and tomatoes), and our countless historical sites and landmarks, to name a few. Soon, we'll be known for something else, too: science. The amazing North Jersey interactive science museum Liberty Science Center has always been a fun and educational place to take the kids, but Jersey City is stepping it up big time with plans to develop a mega science and technology project nearby.

And it's far from kids' stuff: The city's redevelopment agency is putting the Center in charge of developing 16 city-owned adjacent acres into something called SciTech Scity, a campus that will include a technology business incubator, biotech lab, coding lab, light manufacturing space, and even a science-themed 135-room hotel with residences for visiting scientists and college students. The idea is that the project (which will be raising $80 million in funding—nothing to sneeze at) will attract entrepreneurs and scientists who will develop new technologies, launch new businesses, and of course, create lots of new jobs in the process.

And there's something in it for the kids too: The project's current plans also include a grade school with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) focus for the budding scientists out there. No word on a slated completion date, but we're hoping for warp speed.
