Azucar Cuban Restaurant Opens in Closter NJ

If your 2017 bucket list includes a trip to Havana (and let’s face it, whose doesn’t?) we’ve got the perfect hack for you.

Experience all of Cuba’s delicious flavors and charms without the plane ticket—just book a table at new restaurant Azúcar Cuban Cuisine, in Closter, NJ.

Armed with his mother’s recipes, Chef Nick Vazquez has created a menu that takes traditional Cuban cuisine to the next level— including his celebrated Cuban sandwich, a dish that famously made Vazquez a winner on the Food Network’s “Throwdown with Bobby Flay.”

We stopped by for lunch during Azúcar’s soft opening earlier this week for a taste of what all the fuss is about. First off, the place is beautiful, decked out in dark woods, candlelit tables, a private party room, and a large bar area, which we hear will feature live music and possibly a cigar rolling station in the weeks to come.

After being seated by our friendly hostess, we ordered a starter of super-fresh, homemade guacamole served with crispy, crunch plantain chips. We also tried the Pechugitas de Pollo al Ajillo (grilled chopped boneless breasts cooked in white wine, garlic and saffron; $17) and the Camarones a La Plancha (skewered grilled shrimp seasoned with lime, fresh herbs, and black pepper; $23). Both were outstanding, full of flavor and accompanied by a side of rice or salad.

Of course, we also had to try that award-winning Cuban sandwich. Called the “El Cubano Grande” ($11.95), it’s pressed to perfection and stuffed with roasted pork, sweet ham, Swiss cheese, thinly sliced Kosher pickles, and just the right amount of mayo. After just one bite, we could see why this baby kicked Bobby Flay’s to the curb.

And for evenings with your gaggle, we hear mojitos are a must-order here, along with all kinds of craft beers, a full selection of spirits, and an extensive wine list.

Now that’s our kind of cocktail social(ism).
